The Gates was a monumental public art installation by Christo and Jeanne-Claude realized in New York’s Central Park in February 2005 after more than two decades of planning and negotiation. Comprising 7,503 saffron-colored fabric panels suspended from steel gates lining 23 miles of park pathways, the project transformed the winter landscape into a vivid, immersive environment that shifted with light, weather, and movement. Inspired in part by the flowing robes and pathways of traditional Japanese gardens, The Gates invited millions of visitors to experience Central Park in an entirely new way — turning an everyday public space into a temporary work of art defined by ephemerality, participation, and spectacle.
