Traditionally crafted in southwestern France, this hand-thrown earthenware pot à confit features a warm yellow ochre glaze with scattered copper-green 'kiln runs' incidental drips off of other vessels in the kiln. Dimensions: 10.5" H x 9" W from handle to handle, jar opening 7" diameter
Condition: Very good overall, with wear, glaze loss, and surface variations consistent with age and use, contributing to the individual character of the piece.
Historically, confit jars were used to preserve duck, goose, and other meats beneath a protective layer of rendered fat. Their characteristic half-glazed upper body and unglazed base allowed the vessels to be stored in cool cellars or partially buried, helping maintain a consistent temperature while protecting their contents.
